A FEATURE-LENGTH documentary about Irish drag queen Panti Bliss has raised over €50,000 in public donations.

Panti burst into the public consciousness earlier this year after RTÉ redacted comments made by Rory O’Neill from its online player – members of the Iona Institute and columnist John Waters took legal issue with O’Neill’s thoughts on homophobia in Ireland.

The incident inspired Panti’s now-famous Noble Call speech at the Abbey Theatre in February, which quickly became a viral sensation.

Directed by Conor Horgan, The Queen Of Ireland centres on how Rory O’Neill (AKA Panti) became a figurehead for LGBT rights in Ireland – and the speech that helped energise the fight for gay marriage.

At the beginning of August, Irish production company Blinder Films started a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the project.

Now, less than two days short of the end date, the campaign has passed its target of €50,000 – the total amount stands at €50,424 at the time of writing.

Director Horgan has tweeted his thanks, saying he is “overwhelmed with gratitude” at the volume of donations.

Here’s the final teaser trailer for the documentary – you can watch previous teasers here.
